“From Meditation to Creation”

by Susanne Werblow

Yoga and art are two of my major passions in life.

I have been practicing and teaching Kundalini Yoga for many years. It is an ancient form of yoga that focuses on conscious breathing techniques, meditation and sound healing. It’s very centering and healing.

Making art is my other “happy place”. Since I can remember I felt the need to create and art has always had a deeply calming effect on me. When my parents gave me a piece of paper and pencils, they would not hear from me for hours. At 15, I moved to Paris and then later to New York City. I was dazzled by the incredible art that I experienced in both cities. Visiting museums and art galleries became one of my most favorite activities.

Both practices, yoga and art, help me focus on the present moment. I follow my intuition, get out of my thinking brain, let go of the need to control … And out of this practice flows my art. I noticed that yoga enhances that creative flow. Often, during meditation, I see colors and shapes and it sparks the desire to run into my art studio and paint. And while painting, I listen to yogic chants and sing along, entering a state of deep peace and flow.

My painting style and some of the symbolism that I use, are inspired by Australian aboriginal ritual paintings. I have been fascinated by that tradition for many years. I loved going to the Musee du Quai Branly in Paris because of its amazing collection of Australian aboriginal art. The huge mesmerizing dot paintings touched me so deeply that I started experimenting with the technique myself. The dot technique allowed me to create vibrant color juxtapositions and bring to life, through my creations, the visions I have in meditation.

My other influence has been African art. I have spent my childhood in West Africa where I loved the wood-carved sculptures that my parents collected. Many of my meditative faces have been inspired by African masks.
